reasoning with windmills (2016) for guitar
“Reasoning with Windmills” is a short guitar solo written for and dedicated to the extraordinary Tolgahan Cogulu. This piece is in part inspired by Pablo Picasso’s 1955 sketch of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, with Quixote mounted on horseback, and Panza upon his donkey. Several windmills are present in the background. This composition explores some of the sounds that I imagine you might hear trying to battle a windmill on horseback. Additionally, the composition is inspired by the idea of being confronted with a problem, attempting to solve it, and being confronted by the exact same response each time, particularly when trying to communicate with other people. Put another way, this composition is a short contemplation on Einstein’s quote: “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
“Reasoning with Windmills” was written for and is dedicated to the extraordinary Tolgahan Cogulu. It is 4-5 minutes long
An arrangment for six string guitar is available for purchase from Edition Zalzal.
