krev-sanglots (2015) // cheat sadness (2023)

krev-sanglots

chamber concerto for bass clarinet, three percussionists, piano, cello, and bass

premiered Feb 28, 2015 at Montclair State University

krev-sanglots and cheat sadness is a work that has spanned some 8 years of collaboartion between myself and clarinetist extraordinaire and composer Gleb Kanasevich.

krev-sanglots was originally conceived of as a chamber concerto for bass clarinet and a small contingent of strings, percussion, and piano. The title translates to blood and tears (Czech - krev, French, sanglots).

This work was gradually expanded upon and turned into a bass clarinet solo wherein all of the parts of the ensemble were condensed and rearranged for just Gleb. It was reborn as “cheat sadness.”

Krev/Sanglots can be heard in the video here - the video is mistitled with the previous working title, pour Gleb
